Olivia Castillo: Writing Memory, Heritage, and the Stories That Refuse to Be Forgotten

Some writers chase plots. Others chase truth. Olivia Castillo belongs to the latter—an author whose work is rooted in cultural memory, emotional honesty, and the quiet power of storytelling that preserves what history often overlooks. A New York City native, Castillo has spent her life observing, absorbing, and translating experience into language, creating novels that bridge past and present with lyrical depth and historical weight.

Through her acclaimed Songs of the Boricua trilogy, Castillo has emerged as a vital literary voice—one that honors Puerto Rican heritage while exploring resilience, identity, and survival through generations.

An Artist Formed by City, Family, and Books

Castillo’s creative foundation was laid early. She attended the prestigious Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, an environment that encouraged discipline, curiosity, and artistic courage. She later studied graphic design at Otis Parsons College in Los Angeles, strengthening her visual sensibility—an influence that would later surface in the vivid imagery of her prose.

Her love for storytelling, however, began long before formal education. Encouraged by her mother’s passion for books, Castillo grew up journaling, writing poetry, and losing herself in literature. Authors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck, Leo Tolstoy, and the Brontë sisters shaped her early understanding of honesty, emotional complexity, and character. Later, the influence of Isabel Allende and Gabriel García Márquez introduced her to magical realism—an approach that would become integral to her own work.

Castillo’s writing blends history with imagination, weaving subtle elements of magical realism into historical narratives to deepen emotional truth and cultural resonance.

Finding Her Voice Through Heritage

After completing an online writing course through UCLA, Castillo began developing the idea for her first novel. Though she initially considered writing a Western, her creative instincts pulled her toward something more personal: her Puerto Rican roots. She wanted to understand her own heritage more deeply—and to shed light on Puerto Rico’s complex social and political history, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane María.

That decision led to the creation of Song of the Boricua, the first novel in what would become a trilogy nearly a decade in the making. Castillo began writing the book almost ten years before its completion. At one point, the manuscript sat untouched under her bed for five years, paused by self-doubt and life’s responsibilities.

It wasn’t until attending an acquaintance’s book signing and speaking with published authors that something shifted. Castillo returned to the manuscript with renewed determination, rewriting it with clarity, courage, and a stronger sense of self—now shaped by motherhood, partnership, and lived experience.

Recognition Earned Through Persistence

Upon publication, Song of the Boricua received the 2019 Readers’ Favorite Bronze Medal for Historical Fiction, marking a breakthrough moment in Castillo’s career. The novel led to appearances on the award-winning Atlanta-based Kelly Show and the San Diego radio program The Soul Suite, introducing her work to a broader audience.

She followed with Daughter of the Boricua, written between 2020 and 2022, which earned the 2022 Literary Titan Silver Award for Historical Fiction and became a finalist for the 2022 Readers’ Favorite Award. Castillo later returned to The Kelly Show for an in-depth follow-up interview, further solidifying her presence in the literary space.

Her achievements continued to grow: a 2023 cover feature in Voraka Magazine, a 2024 Fab Over 40 nomination, and the 2025 Golden Pen Award during Literary Week for excellence in historical fiction.

Yet, accolades have never been the driving force. For Castillo, recognition is meaningful because it affirms that stories rooted in cultural truth still resonate.

A Life Built Around Storytelling

Beyond her literary success, Olivia Castillo is an entrepreneur, a mother of three, and a grandmother of two. She balances writing with travel and painting, allowing creativity to move fluidly across mediums. Her life reflects the same themes found in her books—resilience, curiosity, and evolution.

She has completed the third and final novel of her trilogy, Heart of the Boricua, scheduled for publication in 2026, bringing a deeply personal and expansive project to its conclusion.

At the same time, Castillo has returned to an earlier creative pull: the Western. She is currently writing a new novel in the genre, fully aware that there are few female Western writers—and even fewer Latina voices. That challenge is precisely what draws her in.

Why She Writes

Castillo describes writing as both necessity and responsibility. Growing up surrounded by artists, history, and cultural dialogue in New York City shaped her understanding of expression. Writing became her way of examining difficult truths, preserving memory, and honoring stories often left untold.

Entrepreneurship emerged from necessity as well. By publishing independently, she maintained creative control, connected directly with readers, and remained true to her voice. For her, storytelling is not about trends—it is about integrity.

Looking Forward

What Olivia Castillo is most proud of is not simply finishing one book—but finishing a trilogy. Staying true to her vision through doubt, delay, and reinvention is her greatest achievement. Her work stands as a testament to persistence and purpose.

As she looks toward future projects, Castillo remains committed to telling stories that explore identity, resilience, and the human experience—across cultures, histories, and genres.

In a literary world that often favors speed, Olivia Castillo writes with patience, depth, and devotion—proving that the stories worth telling are the ones that take time to live.
